If you follow a sport for long enough you'll probably come to think you know just about everything you need to know about the game. Reading this book will reveal to any baseball fan that there are some things he didn't know, or misunderstood, or maybe just never thought about. This isn't an encyclopedia, it's more a collection of observations and explanations about bit and pieces of the game. Some seem obvious, some are more obscure, but all are part of an informative and entertaining collection. This makes it a book for fans rather than scholars, but it's a book most baseball fans will read more than once. I loaned my copy to a baseball buddy and he was so slow giving it back that I ended up telling him to keep it since my wife had given me another copy for my birthday. If you want a gift for a baseball fan, this book is perfect.

I love watching the ball hawking videos that Zach has done for years now on YouTube and he really has helped me rediscover my love of Baseball. This book helped to answer some of the “advanced” questions that I had about the game, and also reinforce the basics that I already knew. I did knock it down a star because it is dry in a few parts and a bit too technical in others, but overall it is a very worthy read for anyone with an interest in baseball.
I did not grow up watching and playing baseball. In fact, I only became interested in the sport as an adult, and I mostly watch it on TV. With that in mind, the book has been very helpful and informative. I now have a better sense of many things that seemed deeply mysterious only a few weeks ago, such as the infield fly rule, for instance. It also made me appreciate how difficult the game of baseball is at the major league level.
That said, the book would certainly benefit from an update, especially regarding the effects of the analytics revolution on how the game is played.
This book provided a lot of good information for me. I’ve been watching baseball for quite some time but feel like I stalled out in knowledge after I learned the basics. Baseball has so many nuances and history, that it’s impossible to know it all. But this book gave me a good jump on things.
I do feel this book wouldn’t make much sense to someone trying to learn baseball from the start. It also wouldn’t be much good for the already-experts.
My only gripes with this one were that it definitely needs some editing (some basic grammatical errors seemed to have slipped through), and the format needs a little work. There are way too many references to footnotes and the glossary, which makes some stuff really hard to follow, especially if reading on a . The book is also surprisingly outdated already with all the changes that have happened in the MLB in the last couple of years. For example, this book says that the commissioner tried to push a rule to allow intentional walks to be automatic, but that it never happened. Well, now, that is a rule, and someone reading this book wouldn’t know that.
I must give Zack some credit here. For the last few decades I have had my own personal stat that no one else seemed to notice until this book. It concerns the runner on first stealing second base. He mentions that if a runner can get three steps before the pitcher lets go of the ball he will probably be safe. What I noticed a long time ago is that if it is possible to count the steps a runner takes before the pitch is thrown you can usually tell if he will be safe or out. If the runner only gets two steps he will always be thrown out. If the runner gets four steps then there is no chance the catcher will throw him out. If the runner gets three steps then it could go either way. I thought I was the only person to notice this. Otherwise it is a very excellent book. Zack knows his stuff.
Decent book for baseball fans- I see it more as an introductory book with some fun facts. The book was enjoyable but to myself (a big baseball fan) much of the info was already known, so the book was a bit of a bore. If you're just getting into baseball, this book is for you!
I'm not a sports guy, but I always thought I could enjoy baseball. I've bought a couple of baseball books in the past to help me learn more about the game, but they were pretty tedious. In this book, however, Zack Hample was able to convey not only the rules, but the strategies, the traditions, and his own love for the game - and he did it in a witty and entertaining way. With this book and a subscription to MLB-TV I followed the Dodgers for their entire 2017 season and plan to do so again in 2018. I've also begun to teach myself how to keep a baseball scorecard so I can better follow and recollect each game. This is a great book for anyone with an interest in baseball, from the casual fan to the dedicated baseball fanatic or, as in my case, those who are simply curious about the game and wonder what its attraction is.

Reading this book will reveal to any baseball fan that there are some things he didn't know, or misunderstood, or maybe just never thought about.
