I am huge fan of the Dresden novels. I loved the short-lived tv series. Harry and his friends are in the rare category of characters that I really miss while I am waiting for the next book, and I thank my lucky stars that author Jim Butcher plans 20 in the series. So I was quite excited to find 2 Dresden short stories and this novella, BACKUP, while impatiently waiting for the next full length installment. I crave any visit to the Dresden world, in any form, and BACKUP did not disappoint. The main focus of BACKUP is Harry's older brother, Thomas, who just happens to be a vampire. Told in Thomas's voice, rather than Harry's, BACKUP gives the reader insight in to Thomas's psyche: the monster he must control, his view of and feelings for his little brother, the love that he has lost, and other parts of his life that we never see in Harry's stories. While the story is pure, dependable Butcher, Thomas has his own voice, his own views on, well, everything, and his own battles. It was very nice to see Thomas coming into his own as a complete, well-rounded "person," more than just Harry's trusty sidekick.
I truly enjoyed BACKUP, as I have enjoyed all the Dresden stories. This is reading for pure pleasure and pure entertainment. Backup is a page turner that is easily read in one sitting of about an hour. If it is Mr. Butcher's intent to create a spin off series based on Thomas, I will be one of the first in line to buy it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Jim butcher has a new anathology set out now that tells the same story. Minus the art.
I thought it was worth getting just to read it right away. It's definitely not the same as Butcher's quality and he almost doesn't come across as a different character, rather than a splinter / clone of the Harry Dresdan.
There are definitely things that are not Harry's thoughts and it's cleverly done. It shows Thomas as extremely resourceful and adaptive. I'd almost rather see more books about Thomas from the way Jim Butcher handled this story.
I've seen a lot of negative or ambivalent reviews for Backup and I think they are misrepresenting the demographic. I knew that it was a short 70 page novelette and a companion book to the Dresden Files, I think anyone who was confused about it could have easily learned everything they wanted to know by doing a simple google search.
As for the story itself, I really liked "seeing" the DF world from a perspective other than Harry's. I think Thomas is a good narrator and while Backup gave me more confidence that Thomas wasn't going to turn on Harry, I still am unsure about the whole Oblivion War. I'm excited to learn more and I'm sure it will become important in later novels.
My only complaint is that it's too short, but as a fan I think all the books are too short and want another the instant I finish.
Bravo, Mr. Butcher. Keep up the good work.
Thomas lacks the narrative voice and presence that Harry has, but I quite enjoyed this little adventure. If nothing else, it was pretty cool just to learn a bit more about the people surrounding Harry from another perspective. And it was a nice read for the middle of the semester when I really don't have time to immerse myself in the entire series again. (That re-read is going to have to wait for summer.) On the other hand, I thought the stories in Side Jobs were a better showing of Butcher's short-story-writing talents, and I'd be more likely to share that collection with newcomers to the series. For what it was, though, I'd definitely recommend this little book to other Dresden Files fans, and I'm delighted to have it for my own shelf!
I am a fan of vampire literature and of The Dresden Files. Getting a story told by Thomas Raith was a real treat for me. I love that he was able to confirm Harry Dresden's views of him. The only draw back to this novella is it seems to be foreshadowing something bad that may happen to Thomas in The Dresden Files book series. I love this character and I think this book was specifically designed to make you grow attached to him and it worked. I haven't been this fond of a vampire protagonist since Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat. It's true this is a short novella but it's very good and very well written.
The Dresden Files are an Urban Fantasy book series by Jim Butcher about a private investigator who happens to be a wizard. Supernatural creatures secretly live among us and it's up to Dresden to try to keep order in Chicago. In the third book of the series the incubus Thomas Raith is introduced. In the sixth book you learn that he is really Dresden's long lost half brother who has been secretly looking out for him. Backup (taking place after Dresden finally knows of his incubus half-brother) tells of one of Thomas' adventures looking out for Dresden without him realizing it.
Thomas is not your typical Incubus. He feeds through the intimacy of washing hair, taking tiny sips from his customers as he works as a hairstylist making for a very unique twist on the Incubus legend.
